{"id":3313,"date":"2020-05-01T11:05:58","date_gmt":"2020-05-01T17:05:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.epicore.ualberta.ca\/home\/\/?p=3313"},"modified":"2024-07-09T13:44:51","modified_gmt":"2024-07-09T19:44:51","slug":"piluts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.epicore.ualberta.ca\/home\/piluts\/","title":{"rendered":"A Quality Improvement Project to Address lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) by pharmacists in the community (PILUTS)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Purpose:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>To determine if pharmacists in the community improve patient management of lower urinary tract symptoms.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Setting:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Community pharmacies in Edmonton and surrounding area<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Participants:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Seniors who come to the community pharmacy<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Design:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>randomized controlled trial<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Control group:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Pharmacist asks some assessment questions about LUTS<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacist determines the baseline scores on the patient questionnaire<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacist provides a healthy aging pamphlet<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacist contacts the patient again at 6-8 weeks and determines the scores on the patient questionnaire<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Intervention:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Pharmacist follows the assessment questions regarding LUTS<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacist determines the baseline scores on the patient questionnaire<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacist follows the algorithm and identifies behavioural, lifestyle, and medications that affect LUTS<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacist works with patient to come up with plan to make changes to improve LUTS<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacist contacts patient\u2019s family physician regarding the LUTS plan<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacist contacts patient at 3-4 weeks to review how plan is working<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacist contacts patient again at 6-8 weeks and determines the scores on the patient questionnaire<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Study Rationale:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Approximately half of seniors are affected by LUTS.<\/li>\n<li>LUTS negatively affects health, mobility, and socialization.<\/li>\n<li>Most seniors do not have this issue addressed or have long delays in diagnosis.<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacists in the community have the knowledge and skills to help seniors with LUTS.<\/li>\n<li>A pilot study in 2016 showed that pharmacists can effectively implement this intervention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Research Team:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Lead: Cheryl Sadowski, Professor, Faculty of Pharmacy &amp; Pharmaceutical Sciences<\/li>\n<li>Research Assistant: Sarah M.
